You need to distribute to remove the parentheses:
1/2(6x+10)-(x+8)
--> 3x+5-x-81/2(6x+10)-(x+8)
combine like terms
3x+5
-x-8
____
2x+13
1/2(6x+10)-(x+8) is 2x+13 simplified

1/2(6x+10)-(x+8)
= (3x + 5) - (x+8)
= 3x + 5 - x - 8
= 2x - 3
